ERC publishes a Report on Sociocultural Diversity in the Media for the period 2020-2023
The ERC is publishing, this Friday, the report “Sociocultural Diversity in the Media 2020-23”, which presents an analysis of daily news content and radio and television programming, as well as ERC´s deliberative activity related to content involving the different social and cultural groups.
As the body responsible for promoting and safeguarding “cultural pluralism and the diversity of expression of various schools of thought, through entities engaged in media activities subject to its regulation” (point a) of Article 7 of the ERC Statutes; Law no. 53/2005, of November 8), ERC is obliged to systematically monitor diversity and pluralism in news and programming.
The monitoring of daily news between 2020 and 2021 focused on three fundamental dimensions: diversity of origin and ethnicity, religious diversity, and gender diversity, assessing the presence of these groups in daily prime-time news broadcast by: Telejornal (RTP1), Jornal 2 (RTP2), Jornal da Noite (SIC), Jornal das 8 (TVI) and CM Jornal 20H (CMTV).
The analysis of television programming from 2020-2022 focused on programmes intended to promote cultural diversity and the interests of minority groups, which were broadcast by RTP1, RTP2, SIC and TVI. Meanwhile, the analysis of radio programming from 2020 to 2022 is based on content from public service stations — Antena 1, Antena 2 e Antena 3 — that address topics related to ethnic, cultural religious and social minorities.
