João Pedro Nunes Lemos Figueiredo

Holds a law degree from the University of Coimbra Law School (FDUC), as well as postgraduate degrees in Media Law (Legal Communication Institute/FDUC) and in Information Society Law (University of Lisbon Law School).

On 14 December 2017 he was elected by the Assembly of the Republic as a member of the ERC Regulator Council - The Media Regulatory Body.

He was recruited for this role from the Concession Holder of the Portuguese Public Radio and Television Service (RTP), where he is a senior staff member, forming part of the respective legal management and acting as legal adviser to the Independent General Board.

In 2017/2018 he lectured on the subject of Media Law and Ethics for the Communication Sciences Degree at the School of Social and Human Sciences at Lisbon’s Nova University.

Between 2007 and 2015 he was a guest professor at several Lisbon universities: at ISCTE, where he taught on the subject of Media Policy and Regulation for the Master’s Degree in Communication, Culture and Information Technologies; at ESCS, where he lectured on the subject of Communication Law as part of the Journalism Degree; at ULHT, where he was responsible for the subject of Media Law Issues, as part of the Master’s Degree in Journalism, Politics and Contemporary History.

He held the positions of Deputy Minister for Parliamentary Affairs between 2005 and 2011, and Secretary of State for Media between 1995 and 2002. In this capacity he participated in the preparation, organisation and monitoring of legislation that currently regulates the media sector in Portugal.

He co-authored the books entitled “Direito da Comunicação Social” (3rd edition, 2012, Texto editora) and “Legislação Anotada da Comunicação Social” (2005, Casa das Letras/Editorial Notícias), with Professors Alberto Arons de Carvalho and António Monteiro Cardoso. He is the author of several articles published in the media on the topic of media regulation. He regularly takes part as a speaker at meetings on social communication issues.

He produced, broadcast and directed programmes on Coimbra University Radio.
