Mário António da Mota Mesquita

Mário Mesquita was born in Ponta Delgada, in the Azores, in January 1950. He is an associate professor at the Higher School of Media (deputy professor (though an open tender).

He is a guest professor at the Lusófono University. He received his degree in Media from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. He was a journalist at República (1971-1975), and director (1978-1986) and associate director (1975-1978) of Diário de Notícias; Director of Diário de Lisboa (1989-1990).

Readers’ ombudsman at «Diário de Notícias» (1997-98). He helped to create the Journalism degree at Coimbra University’s School of Humanities, in his capacity as associate professor (1993-1988). He was an assistant professor at the School of Social and Human Sciences at Lisbon’s Nova University.

He was awarded the Artur Portela Prize by Casa de Imprensa for his journalistic activity over his professional career (1987); the Reporting Prize by the Portuguese Press Club (1986), the Gazette of Merit Prize, awarded by the Journalists Club, for the activity that he carried out in his capacity as readers’ ombudsman (1998); and the Manuel Pinto de Azevedo Jr. National Prize in the Investigation category, granted by the O Primeiro de Janeiro newspaper (1999).

Columnist at Público, Diário de Notícias and Jornal de Notícias. Author of eight books on the subject of Media.

He was decorated with the Order of King Henrique (1981) by President António Ramalho Eanes due to his civic and political activity before and after the 25th of April. He was also awarded the Ordre nationale du Mérite (France, 1979) and the Ordre Léopold II (Belgium, 1982). Distinguished by the Regional Legislative Assembly of the Azores Autonomous Region with a medal of recognition (2011). Distinguished by the Ponta Delgada Municipal Government with a diploma of recognition, due to the importance of his career as a journalist, writer and politician (2015). Declared Honorary Deputy by the Assembly of the Republic (2016). Received a medal of honour from the Portuguese Society of Authors (2017).

On December 14th 2017, Mário Mesquita was appointed Vice-President of the Regulatory Board.
